NIKOLAUS HIRSCHMANN: EN BUSCA DEL MUNDO INTERIOR; NIKOLAUS HIRSCHMANN:IN SEARCH OF THE INNER WORLD

One of the satisfactory things of the social networks is that we find plastic artists that are working all over the world. In this opportunity we have run into Nikolaus Hirschmann, a German plastic artist. He works both in figurative and abstract art. Though we don´t know him personally, through the interview he has kindly granted us we discover that he has very clear ideas about his role in art. In his paintings we find vibrant colors and original forms.

When did you decide to dedicate your life to art?
There was no decision. I live a life with art since I am born. I never saw myself out of being into art, but I never called myself an artist. This can do other people. I would call myself as a searcher. Searcher in expression of form and formlessness.

No hubo decisión. Nunca me he considerado fuera del arte, pero nunca me he llamado artista.

Tell us about your formation as an artist. In which art schools did you study and who were your main teachers?
My main teacher was Herr Alfred Ritter an old landscape painter from the small village - south of Germany - were I was living the first 12 years. I visited him daily from when I was 7 years old and I remember his house a little outside the village in the forest. There was this smell of color when one came in the house which catched me till today. This was the moment I became a painter. He teached me working with color. But there was nothing new. It was only remembering what I have done in past lives too. ;)
So - later I studied photography from 1973-75 in Munich at the Bayerische Staatslehranstalt für Photography. You can find some of my photographic work also at www.nikolaus-hirschmann.de click to* more hirschmann - on the left menü.
I did not study in art schools. I studied life and there was no reason to go the academic way. I worked for 20 years as a photographer in portrait, fashion and theatre photography. from 1990 - 93 I studied at the academy of advertisement in Bonn. I stopped totally with photography 1993 and started working daily as a painter 20 years ago. But I always painted Bayerische Staatslehranstalt für Photography. painting on photos 1974. I dropped the 6x6 Rollei camera and ordered canvas 1993.

Would you have liked to paint in another place and era?
No. Why? Maybe I already did in past lives. But only the "Now" is of interest because it is the only reality: now.

No. ¿Para qué?

In the history of art who are your favorite artists.

Kindly describe a typical working day in your workshop.
I do not give workshops. I work in a small studio. 3 hours a day. Every day. Its 2 rooms. 1 for work. 1 for the works.

No doy talleres.

How many days of the week do you dedicate to painting?
Every day. But not more than 3 hours. Its enough.

In your art work, what has more importance: inspiration or perspiration?
no perspiration. never. my work comes from within. my own self. which is free from perspiration and suffering. suffering is not necessary for good art. a harmonic person can create harmonic work, which uplifts people and brings them in contact with their higher self. art is a spiritual habit for me.

Traspiración, no. Nunca.

Why do you prefer wall paint over oil or acrylic paint?
I prefer nothing. I want to work quick out of the moment, out of transcendence. So I use acrylics, which dries quickly. I would use oil because of the structure but the process to dry is too long. I work on my paintings again and again and so I use acrylics. Sometimes I work on 15 year old paintings and someday they are finished or not. Because of this some of my paintings are heavy weight. There can be 5 paintings on one canvas ;) I work till I know it´s finished. This can be with the first paint, but can also take some years.

No tengo preferencias.

Why do you prefer abstract painting over figurative painting?
I don't. There is no such system in my work. I do abstract today and tomorrow realistic or surreal or hotchpotch. Anyway...no limits in systems. Only searching for the finer things. Max Ernst said: A painter who has found his style is a dead painter. Always looking for this which wants to be created by some higher force inside.

Would you consider you work as naive?
If Paul Klee was naive - I would say yes. But there was never any consideration about in which concept my work can be found. About this some art historians can think about later.

Hoy hago abstracto y mañana realista o surrealista o mezcolanza.

Aside from painting, what other art techniques do you practice and with what regularity.
None. Techniques are for those who are technicians. Art is a flow and I never think about techniques or something like this. One has to come into the flow and then there is no more thought on any technique.

If you had the chance to steal from any museum in the world a painting of your choice for your own collection, which one would you choose?
First: I would not steal a painting. But if they would give me one as a present/offer, I would choose a small Leonardo painting of a female head. Not the Mona Lisa. There are perfect others too. He was the perfect artist and scientist both. A perfect holistic life.

How do you evaluate the current art scene in Germany?
The art scene everywhere in the world, Germany also, is dictated by some very big galleries from New York and their taste has become the taste of gallerists all over the world. There is nearly no individualist among gallerists. They are these grey men, partly frustrated by their own life and like Vampires living by the creativity of others. So the scene is dictated by money and how to make superstars. The interest is not in quality, it is in something not yet seen before and because of this lack of tradition most of today's art has a lack of quality. But there are always exceptions...

In Germany, what does an artist have to do to sell his/her work?
I don't know. The same as everywhere in the world. Looking for contacts. Showing it. Not only in facebook. Looking to get good exhibitions. Looking to meet people, who are really interested in good art. And last but not least create good art.

No sé.
